Variations of Espresso

Espresso is a popular coffee beverage itself, however, it is also a base for many other coffee drinks some of which are local specialities, while others became popular throughout the globe. Following list features only few most famous variations of espresso and drinks containing espresso:

  • cappuccino, traditionally made of 1/3 of espresso, 1/3 of steamed milk and 1/3 of micro-foam
  • doppio or double shot of espresso
  • americano, usually espresso and hot water in equal part with hot water added to espresso
  • latte or espresso with milk
  • caffe machiato or espresso with small amount of foam
  • mocha or latte blended with chocolate
  • ristretto, traditionally espresso made with less water (10-20 ml)
  • lungo or espresso blended with greater amount of water
  • iced coffee or chilled espresso served over ice
  • affogato or espresso served over gelato, traditionally of vanilla
  • corretto or espresso with a shot of liquor, traditionally grappa, sambuca or brandy
  • cubano or espresso brewed with sugared water
  • cortado or espresso “cut” with small amount of milk
  • espresso con panna or espresso with whipped cream
  • biedermeier (Austrian speciality) or lungo with apricot liquor and whipped cream
  • obermayer or large cup of espresso with thin layer of cold cream
  • flat white (popular in Australia and New Zealand) or 1/3 of espresso and 2/3 of steamed milk
  • white chocolate latte or espresso served over white chocolate milk
