Espresso is a coffee beverage brewed by very hot water under high pressure through finely roasted and ground coffee beans. Espresso originates from Italy, while the word espresso in Italian language literarily means fast although it is often a synonym for coffee beverage worldwide what clearly indicates its popularity.
However, technically speaking espresso refers to the method of preparation of coffee as well as to the roast level of coffee beans used for espresso. To make an espresso is necessary an espresso machine and very dark roasted coffee beans that has been ground very fine or to powdery consistence. However, although is generally considered that roast level for espresso must be dark and almost black somewhere are preferred medium or very light roasted beans.

Espresso also contains greater amount of caffeine than regular brewed coffee, while high-pressure brewing process also results more concentrated flavors what makes it an excellent base for other beverages such as cappuccino, macchiato, mochas and others.
Espresso is served in small cups, while its serving size is usually measured in shots which measures from 25 to 30 milliliters which is about 1 fluid ounce.
